NC Revenue Stamps: What Is the NC Excise Tax on Home Sales and How Much Will You Pay in Raleigh in 2026?
In North Carolina, revenue stamps are the colloquial term for the state’s excise tax on real estate conveyances. The rate is $1.00 per $500 of the sale price — or effectively $2 per $1,000. On a $440,000 home, that’s $880. On a $500,000 home, it’s $1,000. On a $750,000 home, it’s $1,500. The seller almost always pays this tax, and it’s deducted from the seller’s proceeds at closing before you receive your net check. It appears on your closing disclosure and is collected by the county Register of Deeds when the deed is recorded.
